The Crashing of the Dirigible and Other Visions of Scientific Strangeness

May 11, 2005

Last night I had a dream.  I can not recall all the details of the dream, but this is what I do remember.  I recall being with a group of people exploring an old airship warehouse.  It was quite dark inside.  Someone was telling us about this warehouse and about this legendary person who used to design aircraft in it back in the 1940s and 50s.  In my mind’s imagination, I could see this individual designing many different types of aircraft.  I could see some sort of airship flying in the sky looping around upside down and then I saw a terrible sight – the dirigible crashed into the ground.
“His ideas were revolutionary,” whomever was speaking continued. “In fact many of his ideas still mystify scientists and researchers today.” And with that we all walked outside in what look like an old abandoned airfield.  There were markings all over the ground, circles and chalk marks.  People were exclaiming, “Look at this!” and pointing to the remains of what seemed to be equipment used for some sort of laboratory experiment.  In my mind’s imagination, I could fill in missing portions of the remnants to see the whole.  I had the feeling that when I did this, others could see it too and they were amazed and awed as they began to understand this mysterious designer’s work. I could see structures and beams rise to the sky, giant white spools spinning and the chalk markings on the ground came alive, as if we were all transported back to that time and place.
Then the vision was gone, and someone said “I think it still works.”  This individual then ran out across the airfield and leaped into the air and was suspended.  And then another went out and jumped and kicked out his legs in front of him as if he was sitting.  He was also suspended in the air.  Everyone else marveled.  Something different was going on here.  And then I tried.  I leaped as high as I could into the air and placed my legs and feet in front of me in a 90 degree angle.  I must have had full confidence that I would not fall back to earth right on my tush, because I did not question doing so.  I also became suspended and I realized that there was a current of wind below me as if I was riding on air.  However there were no such high-powered fans or energy source from which this wind current to be coming from.  It seemed to be happening on its own, but only after it sensed one’s will to levitate.  And as I was hanging there in the air, I could see many others doing the same thing, but were able to bounce off from their levitating point and rise higher and higher into the sky.  For some reason, my will to do this turned to mush and I felt that I had no energy left.  I gently floated back to the ground.  I stood there watching in amazement the hieghts achieved by others and wanting to do the same.
